(Rebirth from the Buddhist purgatory of animal)

Ryoui of Muryoujuin temple came. He brought me something rare like bamboo shoots etc. I enjoyed eating them. His son Gensyu also brought Saizyu. Saizyu (ten years old) showed me the reading of the Buddhist scriptures and the catechism, and entertained me. This Saizyu is a child of a servant in Muryoujuin temple. People say a dog has been reborn to him. There was a dog in Muryoujuin temple. When the monks were reading the Buddhist scriptures in front of the Buddha statue, this dog always barked in accordance with the monks' voices. Thus many years passed and at last the dog died in front of Buddha. Soon after, the servant's wife became pregnant and Saizyu was born. So, such speculation is caused.

There are also stories in which the animals are reborn as humans by the blessing of the Lotus Sutra in their previous life in the Buddhist narratives. This story also has almost the same content as them. Even in the Muromachi period, it seems that these rebirth stories were believed.
