Today, Ohgimachi Sanjo Sanemasa had previously dreamed, said Kanroji Chikanaga. According to the dream, there was a building around the pond. A portrait of Confucius (Confucianism founder) is hanging on the indoor south wall. On the left side is another portrait. On the right side (west side) of the Confucius image, there was a portrait of Ganen. Having found those portraits and having a feeling of fear and respect, Confucius told Sanemasa "Come in front of me." When he went to Confucius, Confucius told Sanemasa "Reach out." When he stretched his right palm, Confucius wrote two letters there. However, the letters were not clear. Next, the image on the left told Sanemasa to "stretch your left hand". So he spread the palm of his left hand and the image wrote two letters again. After that, Ganen told Sanemasa "Show your back". And he wrote two letters again. After that, Confucius said, "The left hand letters shows that you should not fall into the world where the bad guys go in the afterlife. The right letters hand shows that you are lucky in this world because you are doing the right thing ". I do not remember the explanation about the the back letters. Sanemasa seems to have explained this way. It is natural that Sanemasa himself is impressed by this dream, I guess.

I have written articles about dreams in the Middle Ages of Japan until now, but this time I wrote an example of dreaming about Confucius. One of the rituals that worshiped Confucius was Sekiten, which continued in the Middle Ages. Confucius was not only a Confucian scholar, but a god-like being.

The buildings in the dream were hanging portraits of Confucius (center), his apprentice Gankai (right), and an unknown person (left). This is similar to Sanzon keishiki (the form of three Buddhist images) in Buddhism. Syaka sanzon, Amida sanzon, Yakushi sanzon, Kannon sanzon etc. Can we say it as Confucianism and Buddhism syncretism? In Japan, since when was this format popular?

Well, thinking this way, I am very concerned about who is the unknown person on the left. The second person to write was the person on the left. That is likely to be a person who was considered great or important, rather than the face of being the most talented disciple.

AZUMA Juji ("Reformation of the Confucius Festival by Zhuxi and its Perspective of East Asia" Journal of East Asian Cultural Interaction Studies, 4, 2011-03-31, http://kuir.jm.kansai-u.ac.jp According to this study, the religious rituals conducted by Zhuxi in 1180 were worshiped by Confucius, Gankai, and Moushi. Then, the unknown character on the left side might not have been Moushi. In 1194, Soushi and Shishi will be added, but initially three were worshiped. Neo-Confucianism is transmitted to Japan by Monks of Zen Buddhism in the middle of the Kamakura period. The three noble men forms of Confucius, Gankai and Moushi may have been transmitted from China. Rather than the format originally conceived in Japan, it is considered that the original Chinese format has been introduced as it is.

Even so, what kind of character did you write? I do not have a clue. This is the limit of the dream memory. Writing on the palm and back is like Confucius's behavior that has left excellent sayings, but it is also the influence of belief in 'Kotodama' (the soul or power of language). The right hand character seems to be a charm mark for not falling into hell, and the left hand character seems to be a charm mark for becoming happy in this world. Is there any difference between writing on the palm and writing on the back? I also care about this.
