April 25th, fine. I heard there was a strange bird at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine tonight. The cry was like a crush on a bamboo. The shrine also shook loudly because of the cry. Because it cried on the cedar, people who came to the shrine seemed to be very surprised. A low-ranking monk shot down the bird with a bow. The bird's head was a cat, the body was a chicken, and the tail was like a snake. It was said that the eyes were shining so much. It is a really rare monster. When the priest reported to Ashikaga Yoshimochi, he praised the monk who shot the monster. Yoshimochi gave the kimono and sword as a reward to the monk. I heard that he ordered the monster corpse to flow into the river.

The head is a cat, the torso is a chicken, and the tail is a snake. What is that creature? I do not know such animals .... It may be a monster called a chimera. Surely a long-tailed bird like syrmaticus soemmerringii would scream loudly. People in the Middle Ages should have felt creepy, as the unfamiliar bird cried loudly at dark nights.

By the way, the shot dead monster has been swept into the river as it is. I would burn it up and dispose of it, but the medieval people abandoned it in the river. What sort of funeral customs and other world views did they have? Is there a difference in how to treat humans and monsters? I will investigate further.

Then I investigated further. At first, I thought that the medieval people had buried at the river the slaughtered monster bird. But now, I think that they purified the corpse of monster birds by water as things like disasters, plagues and impurities.

In this historical material, it is written as "flowing monsters into the river." So what does that mean? According to a study by Yamamoto Koji, the impure does not seem to spread in open spaces such as river beach. In addition, water accumulated in a limited area such as a pond or a well does not have purification power, but it seems that running water has purification power. On the other hand, although fire also has purification power, fire that burns unclean things seems to turn into unclean existence.

Since no relevant articles can be found, it can not be guessed any more, but perhaps the emergence of a monster bird was itself recognized as a disaster, or a sign of a disaster. And even if cremating or burialing the remains of the monster bird, the medieval people would have thrown into the river because they wasn't able to purify the disaster and impurities.
